Kids Backpacks for School and Outside

Whether you are doing back to school shopping, or looking for a sports and outdoors day pack, backpacks are one of the best things ever invented.

Buying the right kind of backpack for your child will help avoid common backpack-associated problems such as back pains, strained neck, poor posture and strained shoulders. These problems are most often caused by the too heavy loads of items kids carry around all day.

When shopping for your kid’s backpacks for schools and outings, make sure to check the bag construction. Look for the following features:

•    Backpack weight. The backpack should be light without the load. Avoid heavy materials like leather else it will add more weight to your kid’s already heavy load.
•    Padded features. Their backpacks for schools and outings should feature a padded back for extra comfort and protection.
•    Ergonomic shoulder straps. The shoulder straps should be wide, padded and ergonomic. Narrow and unpadded straps will dig into the shoulders.
•    Waist belt. Backpacks featuring a waist belt help distribute the weight evenly across the body. It may not look cool, but it’s very useful.

Buying the right backpack is only half the job; you have to educate your children in using the backpack.

Teach them to avoid overloading their bags and carrying no more than 10% to 15% of their total weight. See if they avoid overloading their bags with unnecessary items like CDs, magazines and gadgets when going to schools and outings.

For your part, choose to buy paperback books rather than hardbound books to lessen the weight for up to 50%. By doing so, you prevent a lot of health problems for your children by a great lot.

Backpacks don’t need to be plain, ergonomic and boring. They’re for your kids, after all! They will love backpacks with their favorite colors and cartoon characters.

See if you can choose one that fits your child’s personality and desires. This can be done of course, by doing your shopping online. Your backpack options are absolutely unlimited with the rich resources of the World Wide Web! It’s a great way to go shopping for kids.

Autonomy in the Homeschool Classroom

Autonomy is something that should be taught in every classroom not just homeschool classrooms. What is it? Put simply it is responsibility and ownership, so how do you get your children to take responsibility and ownership of their classrooms, their education and their lives. Not so simple, you have to teach them.

The first place to start it to learn to avoid teaching learned helplessness. This is harder than it sounds and it requires a drop in perfection but not in expectation. You have to stop doing everything for your children and start letting them make mistakes. This can be as simple as letting them color outside the lines or making them find the answer to a simple problem that you could tell them the answer to. You have to empower them to think and function for themselves.

To get them to take ownership may take some more work, but it doesn’t all have to be done now. Using the classroom as an example it is essential that the classroom reflect your students and not you as the teacher. This is simple enough putting up pictures and school work is common and very effective. But it can also go deeper than this. You can rely on your children for things, or at least let them think you are relying on them. Have them help clean the white board, turn on the lights or take out the trash. Start small and build up.

This autonomy should also spill over into other areas of life as well. Give your children chores as part of their regular school day not to be finished when they are finished with school. Let them earn some money for working hard, let their efforts count and reward them for hard work.

Teaching autonomy is a tricky business and is more difficult the later you start. Breaking the cycle of learned helplessness can be challenging once your children are older so I suggest you start young.

Homeschooling gives us the opportunity to start young and have a tremendous influence on the lives of our children. Make your time count and make your homeschool education the best it can possibly be.

Bob the Builder Craft Ideas for Kids

Is your child into Bob the Builder?  Instead of just letting them absorb the show through sitting on the couch and watching TV, encourage them to participate in creative pursuits with these great Bob the Builder craft ideas.  They will love that their artwork is connected in some way to their favorite characters!

Popsicle Stick Puppets
Collect and clean — or purchase a brand new bag of — popsicle sticks, preferably ones without writing.  Get some Bob the Builder coloring pages or clip art off the Internet; you can either print it off in color, or print off line art and let your children add the proper color with crayons or markers.  Then, using kid-safe school glue, paste the character onto the popsicle stick.  If the paper wants to flop and bend, add another layer, the same shape as the character cut-out, onto the back to secure it.  Then encourage your children to hold a puppet show!

Build It Boxes
Find some great Bob the Builder images and print or cut them out, then find an unfinished wood product (the most fun for children are boxes).  Using Mod Podge, place and paint over the pictures so that the box is polished and has a great custom design!

Bob-Mobiles
One of the most fun of all Bob the Builder craft ideas is one your older children can make for your younger ones.  Using some image editing software, flip some character images so that they will look the same on both sides.  Have your children cut out the images and color them, then glue them back-to-back, with a piece of yarn in between.  Then tie the yarn, at various heights, to two popsicle sticks glued together to form a cross.  Tie a solid knot with yarn around the center and hang up for your baby to enjoy!

I Hate My Angular Cheilitis

I know “hate” is a very strong word, but that’s how I really feel about the humiliating swollen, crusty cracks in my mouth corners. My primary care Doctor says the condition is not contagious, but everyone treats me like I’m a leper, or a herpes or Aids victim.

Besides having to live with the pain of Angular Cheilitis which is considerable since the mouth corner splits crack open and bleed with almost any use of the mouth like eating, drinking, smiling, or laughing.

I would say kissing, but there is no worry about anyone wanting to kiss you, or for that matter, I wouldn’t want anyone to kiss me because I would be embarrassed and worried that the horrid oozing cracks would re-open and start to bleed.

My romantic life is non-existent since this bout of Angular Cheilitis started more than three years ago. I recently heard about The Angular Cheilitis Cure that is completely natural and can be applied while you’re at home.

How Does One Become a Doctor

When we fall sick we visit the doctor. Doctors treat infections, diseases and illnesses and make us feel better. It must be good feeling saving a person’s life and/or treating an ill person and returning them back to good health. So then, let us look at how to become a doctor.

The first step involves attending college for a bachelor’s degree. At this point one is not required to major on any particular subjects. Nevertheless, it is crucial that one studies such courses as biology and organic chemistry. In order to get into medical school, one is required to sit for the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test). MCAT is the medical school entry exam. One should strive for high MCAT scores as this is the only way they may be assured of a place in a good medical school.

At this point, one may apply into medical school. The application process involves sending reference letters, holding interviews and writing essays. It is worth noting that there are fees associated with the applications. While some fees are reasonable, others are prohibiting. The disadvantage of this is that it restricts the number of applications that one can send out. Individuals are advised to use the American Medical College Application Service when applying into medical school. The service has a website through which individuals may submit their applications. It is crucial that individuals complete their applications on time. Medical school is competitive. Accordingly, if individuals hope to have their applications considered, they should submit them early enough.

If the application is successful one is accepted into medical schools. Medical school takes four years of both classroom and practical work. Classroom work includes anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. For the practical, individuals get to work under the guidance and supervision of already qualified and experienced doctors in hospitals and clinics. While in medical school, individuals are required to select an area of medicine they are most interested in. and apply for residency. Depending on the specialty selected, residency is as short as three years and as long as seven years. After residency, one is required to sit for specialty test in order to be awarded a practicing license.

Anyone keen on becoming a doctor needs to understand that as much as medicine is an honorable profession it is also very challenging. There will be numerous sleepless nights and the work is simply overwhelming. Accordingly, only diligent and motivated individuals may succeed in becoming doctors.

A Basic Guide to Digital Photography

Digital photography can prove to be a very challenging task, especially for those who are just starting out. This aim of this article therefore is to take the user through the step by step guide to digital photography. The first step in digital photography is buying a digital camera, the right digital camera. There are so many digital camera models in the market and it is not easy especially for a beginner, to know which camera model will suit him or her best. Digital cameras are quite pricey and choosing a wrong one can prove to be a costly mistake. Always consider the following factors; long battery life, zoom lens, user controls, mega pixels (2 to 8 for small snapshots and large printouts respectively) and exposure control.

In order to shoot great digital photos, the photographer should know the camera and understand its functioning. It is important to study the manual carefully and to ensure that they understand the camera in and out. A good digital photographer should know how to control the flash, understanding when to switch it on and when it needs to be off.

Other features that may prove helpful in digital photography include macro mode which enables close up snapshots to be taken, the tripod which enables swift moving objects and those in poor lighting conditions to be captured and an ISO setting which controls the sensitivity of a camera to light. Camera should also have enough memory capacity; 64 MB for a 2 mega pixel camera and 512 MB for a 5 or more mega pixel camera. 3 and 4 mega pixel cameras should have a 128MB card and a 256MB card respectively.

After the photos have been taken, the photographer may find that they have certain deficiencies and they need to be touched up. Perhaps the lighting was not good enough or there are some spots which need to be removed or the problem of the red eye. There are several programs of image editing which enable such corrections to be made and photographers only have to identify the one which works for them. Beginners would be best advised to use Ulead PhotoImpact.

It is important to organize all the photos which have been taken, which make it easy for one to retrieve any photo from the hard drive without having to spend too much time looking for them. This is achievable through a good program for photo management with features such as a cataloguing ability and photo backup. You can share these photos through email, printing, uploading or storing on CDs and DVDs.

Looking For Fast Student Loans?

Well, don’t look any further. There are many sites out there that offer them, and you should check them out, but first you need to think about a few things…

Getting a fast student loan is quicker than any other type of loan. It can be done online and you can be approved in minutes. They don’t care about your credit history, good or bad, and you usually get your money very quickly as opposed to waiting for your credit score to be checked out.

Unfortunately, one thing to note about getting a fast student loan is, since the company is approving you so fast, you need to consider how much the interest payments are. Many times websites won’t display them because they are so high and you’ll have to “dig deep” into the site or fine print to find out what the price is.

Whatever your loan choice, fast student loans online will always be a quick and easy solution to the process of getting student loans.
